International Mother Language Day: Bangladesh’s tryst with destiny

73 years ago, Bengali people in East Pakistan protested against the imposition of Urdu as the national language, which led to the martyrdom of several students. The movement was commemorated by UNESCO in declaring International Mother Language Day on 21st February.
